Idaho Public Television Documentary Earns Silver Gavel Award From American Bar Association

Idaho Public Television's documentary special, THE COLOR OF CONSCIENCE: HUMAN RIGHTS IN IDAHO, is one of four recipients of the 2012 Silver Gavel Award for Media and the Arts from the American Bar Association.

The national association announced the recipients this week in advance of its July 17 awards presentation at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

The hourlong special looks at the development of the modern human rights movement in Idaho. It features the story of a small group of concerned citizens who fought against the Aryan Nations, ultimately bankrupting the neo-Nazi supremacist group in North Idaho. The program also examines some of the current human rights issues in Idaho, such as gay rights, immigrant rights, and hate crimes. Marcia Franklin is the producer, writer and host of the documentary; Jay Krajic is the videographer/editor. "We are truly gratified to have THE COLOR OF CONSCIENCE selected as one of only four Silver Gavel awardees by the American Bar Association. It is a privilege to work with gifted storytellers like Marcia Franklin and Jay Krajic," says IdahoPTV General Manager Peter W. Morrill.

The four Silver Gavel winners were chosen from nearly 200 entries with THE COLOR OF CONSCIENCE topping the Television Category. The other winners are in Commentary, Documentaries and Newspapers categories. The ABA also is presenting seven honorable mentions. Selection criteria includes educational value of legal information; impact on, or outreach to, the public; thoroughness and accuracy in presentation of issues; creativity and originality in approach to subject matter and effectiveness of presentation; and demonstrated technical skill in the entry's production.

Major funding for THE COLOR OF CONSCIENCE was provided by: the Idaho National Laboratory, Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation, Idaho Women's Charitable Foundation and Idaho Public Television Endowment.
